A new Democratic gun control move to ban high-capacity firearm magazines is being orchestrated by Denver’s U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, along with New York’s Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy.
The bill, introduced Thursday morning, has been dubbed the High Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act. The measure would reinstate a prohibition that expired in 2004 on the sale or transfer of weapons magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds.
“Since I came to Congress, I have been working to protect our children and our families from senseless gun violence,” DeGette said in a statement. “Recent tragedies have only heightened the need.”
“While there is no single answer to stopping these massacres, this bill is a step that will go a long way toward making our country safe,” she said.
The bill was introduced less than a month after the school shooting last month in Connecticut, at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which killed 20 children and six adults. The shooter, Adam Lanza, used a Bushmaster rifle and carried several 30-round magazines.
McCarthy ran earlier version of the bill in 2011 that DeGette co-sponsored, called the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act. The measure garnered 138 co-sponsors, but basically died due to inaction in a House committee. The 2011 bill was also co-sponsored by Democratic Congressman Ed Perlmutter, of Golden.

According to FBI crime statistics, the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle. Where’s you anti-assault hammer legislation?

What’s a clip?
An Assault Rifle is also defined as having a selectable fire option. Burst or full auto. So this bill will only ban “clips” for assault rifles? Not just regular rifles like an AR-15 that is semi-auto only?
DeGette could not distinguish the difference between an assault rifle and a baseball bat. She is ignorance personified. Being she is from Denver what else can we expect.. Time to write our district representative to vote against DeGette’s folly.
We should also ban cocaine and heroin in quantities over 10oz. Oh wait…
There is no such thing as a 30 round “clip”. I’m glad she understands these weapons enough to make an educated stance on them.
While you’re working so hard to ban these killing machines, be sure to ban all automobiles, alcohol and tobacco. Which each alone, kill WAY more people than guns
She’s confused, and doesn’t care. She just wants to put some kind of measure into place. Instead of forcing the enforcement of current gun laws, which she is, and has been failing at, the next best thing to her is a reacive, idiotic piece of legislature.

How about doing something about Mental health issues? Over 80% of mass shooters can be positively linked as users prescribed psychotropic drugs. The other 20% could also, but their medical records are sealed.
This isn’t about safety or school shootings. It’s about the desire of the members and leaders of the democrat party to be The Party of Tyranny, pure and simple.

Congresswoman, why are you introducing legislation that has already been put on the table?
On her congressional website, firearms and gun control are not listed as part of her “issues and legislation”. She hasn’t cared about them until now, when it’s “popular”.
Of the last 3 years, the large majority of her sponsored legislation has been medical in nature. Number of bills introduced by her on firearms – NONE.
Congresswoman, it appears that you are just “jumping on the bandwagon of popularity”.

How about this formula to control the size of the magazine for your weapon; no magazine will be sold that is greater in length than the flaccid member of the purchaser.

I personally hope she does ban “clips” since she is such an ignorant (typical) democratic lawmaker who thinks that the CT killer, Adam Lanza, used an AR-15 rifle. He didn’t. That was in the news last week or so.

Saw the headline on gazette.com about Degette pushing to ban large magazines and thought she had finally had enough of Time, Newsweek, and People. No such luck, apparently.
This is the stupidest thing I have seen in a long time. When do these idiots get it through their heads that criminals don’t follow rules?? Try looking it up, maybe on Websters’ site. Look under criminal. This is a “feel good, look at me” action, and nothing else. Maybe we ought to look at the relevance of all of the other ammendments as well, since they are obviously so out of date. Start by restricting the production, manufacture, and distribution of violent games and movies. Stop the nut jobs where it starts – in their heads. After you do that then we can talk about the 2nd Amendment. Hollywood is singularly responsible for the violent gun horror but the wealthy producers and actors won’t accept any responsibility for their greed and the politicians are beholden to the great Hollywood dollars and power elite.

Doug is all over the issue. I can’t watch a football game with my daughter without exposing them to horrific violence through ads for video games, movies and the nightly news. Why is it o.k. to advertise movie trailers for PG13 and above rated movies when you’ve paid to see a G rated Disney movie? Even responsible parents struggle to preserve their children’s innocence. Instead of tackling that issue, they just blame the guns. Crazy.

A 2004 study by the National Research Council found that academic studies of the assault weapon ban “did not reveal any clear impacts on gun violence.” A report from the Department of Justice and the National Institute for Justice concluded that the ban had “no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence, based on indicators like the percentage of gun crimes resulting in death or the share of gunfire incidents resulting in injury.”

When “high capacity” magazines were ban between 1994 and 2004 Federal studies said it and the “assault weapon” ban could not be shown to have any effect on crime or murder. In fact according to FBI crime reports murder rates are down since the ban was lifted in 2004.
This proposed ban is just another knee jerk reaction to punish millions law-abiding citizens for the criminal act s of a few. Why not study the real issues and look for meaningful actions that have a chance of working — this ban does not work based on history and facts.
Yes, a ban just like the last one. If this is such a good idea, then were are the stats to show how much the last one helped? There are, in fact, stats on the subject, but the pro gun control folks don’t want to bring them up. You can bet that if the stats supported another ban, they would be telling you about them. The fact is, the stats complied by the US Justice Department showed that the last “assault weapons” and “high capacity magazine” ban did nothing to lower gun crime.
She now wants to fight “senseless gun killings” by enacting more “senseless gun control” that has already proven to be ineffective.
