There will be a trio of informal public meetings in El Paso County in January to discuss possible ramifications and legal aspects of Colorado’s Amendment 64, which legalized the sale and possession of limited amounts of recreational marijuana.
The meetings will be held by the Colorado American Civil Liberties Union, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, El Paso County Libertarians, and the Colorado Springs Medical Cannabis Council.
The state has been tasked with regulating the issue, since the state Department of Regulatory Agencies will have to begin issuing business licenses to hopeful recreational marijuana vendors in 2014. Possession of up to an ounce of marijuana and up to six marijuana plants is already legal. State regulations for recreational marijuana, however, will take months to enact, and may take years to finish — voters approved medical marijuana in 2000, and laws regarding the industry were still being passed in the 2012 legislative session.
Gov. John Hickenlooper created a task force in early December to look at issues surrounding Amendment 64′s implementation. The task force includes Rep.-elect Dan Nordberg, R-Colorado Springs, and Assistant District Attorney Daniel Zook, who works for Fourth Judicial District Attorney Dan May. It’s unclear yet whether either of them or any other task force members will attend any of the three meetings, said an organizer.
