City redistricting poster stolen from press conference

A large city map detailing the new city council districts was stolen Tuesday morning after a public press conference. Which is kind of weird, said the city officials.

“That’s not something we’re used to seeing,” said Colorado Springs City Clerk Sarah Johnson, who ran the press conference and talked about the new six district boundaries.

The map, which can be viewed here, was one of two on display. It was roughly 4′ x 3′. The one stolen outlined small changes made between the original map released in September and the final map released Tuesday morning.

An electronics contractor with the city said he saw the map being taken out of the city administration building by someone in the midst of a crowd.

“There was a group of people walking out and somebody had a big board,” said Christian Wright, the contractor. “It’s strange, because if somebody wanted a copy of the map, they could have just taken one of the printouts we had.”

Cindy Aubrey, spokeswoman for Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach, was bewildered.

“Maybe they wanted it to show it at their neighborhood meeting or something,” Aubrey said. “I don’t think it’s a really big deal.”

Detailed prior maps can be found here. The only changes made between the original proposal and the final one is Johnson moved precinct 170 from district 1 to district 5, precinct 127 from district 5 to district 1, and precinct 420 from district 4 to district 6.
